چکیده

We report preliminary results of a three-dimensional simulation of the buoyant rise of a strongly twisted, kinkunstable magnetic flux tube through a gravitationally stratified layer representing the solar convection zone. The numerical calculations employ the well-known anelastic approximation, which is suitable for studying slow, subsonic dynamical processes in the pressure-dominated, high-b plasma of the solar interior. This Letter investigates the case in which the initial twist of the buoyant flux tube is sufficiently high that the e-folding growth times of the unstable kink modes are short in comparison to the rise time of the flux tube. Our simulation shows that the flux tube becomes kinked and that the top portion of the flux tube evolves into a buckled shape with the tube axis being deflected by more than 907 from its original orientation. We suggest that the emergence of this buckled flux tube can give rise to a compact magnetic bipole with polarity order inverted from Hale’s polarity law, similar to the configuration often seen in d spots. Magnetic helicity and flux tube dynamics in the solar convection zone: Comparisons between observation and theory

[1] Magnetic helicity, a conserved topological parameter in ideal MHD systems, conditions close to which are realized in the solar plasma, is intimately connected to the creation and subsequent dynamics of magnetic flux tubes in the solar interior. It can therefore be used as a tool to probe such dynamics. In this paper we show how photospheric observations of magnetic helicity of isolated magn...

Magnetic flux tubes inside the sun*

Bipolar magnetic active regions are the largest concentrations of magnetic flux on the Sun. In this paper, the properties of active regions are investigated in terms of the dynamics of magnetic flux tubes which emerge from the base of the solar convection zone, where the solar cycle dynamo is believed to operate, to the photosphere. Flux tube dynamics are computed with the ‘‘thin flux tube’’ ap...

THE DYNAMICS OF MAGNETIC FLUX TUBES IN THE SOLAR CONVECTION ZONE A Study of Active Region Formation

1. Abstract We describe some of our recent work on the dynamics of ux tubes in the solar convection zone. We focus on two topics, the rst being the orientation (\tilt") of active regions, and how comparisons between observations of tilt and tilts computed from numerical simulations of ux tubes can be used to infer properties of magnetic elds deep in the solar interior. The second topic is an in...

The Dynamic Evolution of Twisted Magnetic Flux Tubes in a Three-dimensional Convecting Flow. I. Uniformly Buoyant Horizontal Tubes

We present three-dimensional numerical simulations of the dynamic evolution of uniformly buoyant, twisted horizontal magnetic flux tubes in a three-dimensional stratified convective velocity field. Our calculations are relevant to understanding how stratified convection in the deep solar convection zone may affect the rise and the structure of buoyant flux tubes that are responsible for the eme...

THE RISE OF KINK-UNSTABLE MAGNETIC FLUX TUBES AND THE ORIGIN OF d-CONFIGURATION SUNSPOTS

We perform three-dimensional simulations of the rise of twisted magnetic Ñux tubes in an adiabatically stratiÐed model solar convection zone. The initial Ñux tube in our simulations is a uniformly twisted, buoyant, horizontal tube located near the bottom of the stratiÐed layer. The twist of the initial Ñux tube is described by a parameter a, which is deÐned as the angular rate of Ðeld-line rota...
